Methodology
How Exact Age Is Calculated
The locked engine calculates completed calendar years first. It then calculates completed calendar months from that year anchor, and finally counts the remaining days.
Years are not treated as 365 days, and months are not treated as 30 days. Calendar years and months have real varying lengths, so the calculator works from the entered calendar dates instead of averages.
Completed months
Months are added from a fixed anchor. If the target month is shorter, the date clamps to the target month end.
Remaining days
Remaining days are the Gregorian ordinal-day difference from the final month anchor to the reference date.
Leap Years and February 29 Birthdays
The calculator follows Gregorian leap-year rules: years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years unless divisible by 400. That means 1900 and 2100 are not leap years, while 2000 and 2400 are leap years.
For February 29 births, this calculator uses February 28 as the birthday anniversary in non-leap years. Legal treatment of February 29 birthdays can vary by jurisdiction.
Calendar Scope
This calculator uses the proleptic Gregorian calendar for supported years 1 through 9999. It is date-only: no birth time, current time, timezone conversion, or historical Julian-calendar transition is modeled.
Total elapsed days use ordinal-day difference between the two entered dates. Weekday names are lowercase English values from the locked engine and are displayed here for readability.

How is exact age calculated?
The locked engine counts completed calendar years first, then completed calendar months, then the remaining calendar days from the final month anchor.
Why are years not always 365 days?
Calendar years can be 365 or 366 days. The calculator uses actual Gregorian calendar dates instead of converting every year to a fixed day count.
Why are months not treated as 30 days?
Months have different lengths. The calculator uses calendar month boundaries and clamps month-end dates when the target month is shorter.
How are February 29 birthdays handled?
For February 29 births, the engine treats February 28 as the birthday anniversary in non-leap years. This is a calculator convention, not a universal legal rule.
Is the calculator timezone-dependent?
No. The engine accepts explicit date parts and does not use time of day, timezone conversion, or system clock logic.
Can I calculate age on a past date?
Yes. Enter the past date as the reference date. The only restriction is that the reference date cannot be earlier than the birth date.
What if the reference date is earlier than the birth date?
The engine returns an invalid result and the page asks you to choose a reference date on or after the date of birth.
Does the calculator include birth time?
No. It is a date-only calculator. Hours, minutes, seconds, and birth time are outside the V1 methodology.
Does this determine legal age?
No. It computes calendar age only and does not determine legal age for voting, contracts, alcohol, driving, retirement, school, benefits, or other jurisdiction-specific rules.
How are total days calculated?
Total elapsed days are calculated as the Gregorian ordinal-day difference between the birth date and the reference date.
What happens at the end of a month?
Month addition uses a fixed anchor and clamps to the target month end when needed. For example, January 31 to February 28 can be one completed month in a non-leap year.
What happens when the next birthday is beyond year 9999?
The result remains supported, but next birthday, next weekday, days until next birthday, and age at next birthday are shown as unavailable.
